The morning bell rang 4 times as my phone’s alarm began chiming next to my ear on the pillow. I felt the bunk bed shake as Quinn shifted around in her sleeping bag below me, attempting to squeeze in a few more moments of sleep.
The cabin door flew open and light streamed in as I smelled someone with a fresh cup of hot black coffee barge into the room. “Rise and shine, counselors!” A pillow flew from the second bunk bed bellow me, narrowly missing the intruder.
“Now that’s no way to great your head counselor, is it!?”
No one responded.
“Breakfast is in 10 minutes. Don’t be late!” He said as he slammed the cabin door behind him on his way out.
“That man has way too much energy for 7:15 in the morning,“ Quinn groaned below me.
I let out a grunt in agreement, not yet ready to speak quite yet. I hadn’t slept well, continuously waking up throughout the night to the various sounds coming through the open window, always waking up in confusion before grounding myself in my sleeping bag. I’m at camp.
I forced myself up from my pillow, scooted down to the end of my bed and swung my legs over the wooden ledge, feeling around for the ladder. Quinn was already up readying herself in the bathroom when I reached the floor.
“Zara, you gotta wake up now,” I said, grabbing her unzipped sleeping bag and throwing it off her small, curled up body.
“I hate this job already.”
“I know, I’m not a morning person either.”
I splashed cold water on my face and applied sunscreen before I slipped on my oversized sweatshirt, glasses, and adidas athletic shorts.
“Let’s move, ladies,” Quinn chirped as she made her way out the door.
“I’ll meet you at the pavilion,” I said to Zara before I slipped on my rainbows, grabbed my walkie-talkie and Hydroflask and followed Quinn out the door.
